What To Do If Your Child Goes Missing?
Most people will never have to feel the panic and pain in their hearts when their child goes missing. Still, there is an overwhelming number of parents that have had to experience a child that’s gone missing. If you’re ever that parent, thankfully there are some key things you can do to help the situation.
Most Important Things to Do if Your Child Goes Missing
1. Call the police. Many missing children are never reported in a timely manner, and this cuts down the chance of finding them. Doing this within the first 48 hours has proven to be crucial to the process. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to wait 24 hours to report your child missing. Provide the police with an accurate description of your children like their weight, height, eye color, and any identifying features.
2. Search your home and other places your child visits frequently. Sometimes small children are just hiding in a special or secret place. Contact their friends and see where they have likely to have gone in the neighborhood if they ran away. If they are in danger, you may also gain insight into the people they were around before going missing.
3. Keep calm and don’t neglect self-care. You can’t help the situation much if you are flustered. Maintain your composure so you can remain helpful to law enforcement and provide clear details.
Most Missing Children Are Recovered
In 2020 alone, there were a total of 365,348 entries for missing children in the FBI's National Crime Information Center's database. Of the 27,072 reported runaways, only 2,042 are still endangered. Overall, 92% of NCMEC cases were recovered. 1,053 children have been successfully recovered as a result of the Amber program, as of December 31st, 2020.
Whatever you decide to do, when your child goes missing, stay proactive and never stop searching. Sharing as much information as possible with law enforcement and family and friends will make a big difference.
